Obsidian is a mined material, not a ground pickup. It sits in the volcano region, it drops only from cube-shaped smooth black boulders, and the angled columnar black crystal rocks beside them give Rocks instead. Two Smelter recipes take it: DNA ×450 with a Deathcap Mushroom, and Cores ×3 with a Flytrap Leaf.
Evidence boundary: No location list for any Harp Isles material has been published by Harp Atelier. Everything below is read from creator footage recorded on 2026-08-30, so it is one client build on one island layout, not a rule. Material and recipe names were read from on-screen UI at 720p and a spelling or a number can be misread.
Finding it
Five steps from the wrong biome to a collected node
Each step says what it rests on, so a step that stops working in a patch is the one you can point at.
1. Get to the volcano region
Obsidian is recorded in the volcano region, the area with orange lava and the red-orange Smelter beacons sitting over it. It is the same region the maps page files the recorded Smelter station under. If you are looking for it in the forest or the tundra, you are in the wrong biome.
2. Attack the boulder until SHAKE! appears
Obsidian is not picked up off the ground. Attack it until a SHAKE! prompt appears on screen. The same attack-first rule covers rocks, silk and bones, so it is the gathering mode for hard nodes rather than something obsidian-specific.
3. Press G to collect
Once SHAKE! is showing, G grabs the node. E is the pickup key for ground items such as moss, tar and mushrooms, so reaching for E on obsidian is the most common way to stand next to a rock that will not yield.
4. Tell obsidian apart from plain rocks
Only the cube-shaped smooth black boulders are obsidian. The angled columnar black crystal rocks give Rocks instead. Sitting on the wrong black rock is the other reason a run ends with no obsidian.
5. Carry it to a Smelter, not a Forging Shrine
Obsidian is a Smelter input. Both recorded obsidian recipes cook over a timer in the shared Smelter queue, and the queue does not deliver on its own: a Smelt press at 100% is what puts the output in your bag.

Mutation, not material: Obsidian is also the name of a mutation. As a mutation it is a birth-region stat row — recorded as +5 armor and −2 sprint speed for a creature born in the volcanic region. That row has nothing to do with the gathered material, and neither name unlocks the other.

Written down rather than smoothed over. Watching one node you already mined settles the first one.
How many boulders stand in the volcano region per server, and whether the count is fixed. Only individual nodes were ever recorded.
Whether obsidian spawns outside the volcano region. The only region recorded for it is the volcano, and no other biome was searched exhaustively on camera.
